IBM Rational Targets Engineering Lifecycle Management

Software, mechanical, and electrical engineers rely on their own toolsets, with the data from each tool locked away in its own repository. Lacking inter-process standards above the level of Internet protocols, most engineering tool providers have fallen short of the goal of breaching the silos of information that pervade the product lifecycle. IBM Rational, which previously introduced an integration framework for linking tooling data via Internet protocols, has now taken the next step by employing a similar approach to indexing key data artifacts across the product lifecycle.

The IT Skills Shortage

There is a shortage of developers in the software and application development space, particularly in the UK where the digital economy is growing exponentially. With development back in fashion, firms are looking in-house to increase their efforts and investments in sourcing the talent required to sustain their business growth. However, project delays continue to be reported with IT backlogs growing at a rate of 10 to 20% per year.

Being Agile: Eleven Breakthrough Techniques to Keep You from "Waterfalling Backward"

The goal of the book is clearly stated in its first page: "Transforming from a waterfall-based methodology to agile is no small undertaking. This book is for people who may find their team falling back into old habits when the going gets tough or just because an old waterfall approach seems like the right thing to do. It is also for those teams that have adopted agile but do not feel like there has been a significant improvement."

Common System and Software Testing Pitfalls

In the preface of Common System and Software Testing Pitfalls, Donald G. Firesmith writes "You can think of this book as a catalog and repository of testing antipatterns: the pitfalls to avoid, how to mitigate their negative consequences if you can't avoid them, and how to escape from them once you've fallen in. Like a naturalist's field guide to wild animals, let this be your guidebook to the dangerous world of testing mistakes and its denizens – the many creative ways people have discovered to botch testing."

*** Quote of the Month ***

[...] we need to go away from the idea that agile teams are leaderless or that leadership revolves around the team depending on the situation (this type of situational leadership does occur, and often, but it does not replace a designated leader). There is just too much experience and management litterature that shows that good leaders make a big difference.
